Stop Sign Explained - Theory Test

Uk Stop Sign

The STOP sign is one of the most important road signs to recognise for the UK theory test.

It is particularly distinctive because it is the only road sign in the UK that is octagonal — eight-sided.

This means you can identify it from its shape even if the sign is partly obscured.

Theory test - Stop Sign

In your UK driving theory test, a STOP sign means you MUST stop completely. You cannot just slow down and keep moving.

What should you do at a STOP sign?

  1. Stop completely at the solid white stop line.

  2. Look carefully in both directions for traffic, cyclists and pedestrians.

  3. Make sure the road is clear and it is safe to proceed.

  4. Move off only when it is safe.

Remember: If there is no stop line, stop before entering the major road, where you can see clearly in both directions.
