Theory test - What is a Ford?
What is a Ford Sign?
Ford Sign Explained for the Theory Test
The Ford sign warns you that the road ahead passes through shallow water, usually where a stream or small river crosses the road. Unlike a bridge, the road actually runs through the water.
For the theory test, the important point is that the depth and flow of the water can change, depending on recent weather.
How to deal with a Ford
When approaching a ford, slow down and assess the water before entering. Look for a depth gauge if one is provided and don't attempt to cross if you're unsure whether the water is safe.
Never assume you can get through simply because another vehicle has crossed; its ground clearance and ability to cope with water may be very different from yours.

A Ford may be dry
During summer or a long dry spell, there may be little or no water visible at all. The road through the ford might look completely normal, but that doesn't make the warning sign irrelevant.
After heavy rain, the same crossing can quickly become much deeper, and the water may also be flowing faster.
Drive through a Ford carefully
If it is safe to cross, drive slowly and steadily through the water, avoiding creating a large wave.
Once you're clear of the ford, your brakes may be wet and less effective, so test them gently as soon as it is safe to do so.
For your theory test, remember the simple rule: Ford sign = water may cross the road ahead, but the amount of water can vary considerably.
